Thanks to this we were able to unravel the mysteries of the solar system much before we set foot upon the moon. Human societies scaled great heights, explored much and discovered a lot by encouraging free thought. Equally, no loss has harmed more that did the failure of reason. Collapse of the spirit of free inquiry and scientific temper have spelled death of many a civilization once glorious. Obscurantism and fanaticism are inimical to free thought, unfettered by dogma. Sadly even as Internet and communication technology shrink our planet into a global village, and facilitate collaborative enterprises with strangers, we in India are rapidly falling prey to these destructive tendencies. SPRAT is a humble attempt to counter this, to reassert the supremacy of reason over faith, of knowledge over dogma, of inquiry over belief. SPRAT proposes to organize popular lectures, issue newsletters and pamphlets in print and via email, raise its voice against fanaticism and generally to popularize greater understanding of the harmony of Nature.
